Your Dishwasher’s Top Rack May Be Adjustable—Here’s How to Check

Check the dishwasher’s model-specific instructions before moving the upper rack. Some racks change height, some require a different procedure, and some are fixed. A visible plastic clip is not proof that it is a height adjuster.

Changing height trades space between the upper and lower areas. It can help a tall item fit, but it does not create more clearance everywhere at once.

1. Identify the model and the mechanism

Let the machine finish and cool before inspecting it. Find the model number on the appliance label in the location described by the manufacturer, often around the door opening.

Open the official owner’s manual and search for “upper rack,” “height adjustment” or “rack adjuster.” Match the drawing to the parts on your machine. A small top cutlery tray is not necessarily the same rack discussed by the instructions.

Look at both sides without releasing parts. Levers, paired adjusters, wheel positions and rail-end stops can serve different purposes. Do not remove a stop or force a latch because it resembles a clip in a different model’s video.

2. Empty the rack before adjusting

Remove dishes and loose accessories that the manual tells you to remove. Do not try to balance glassware while operating two adjusters.

Whirlpool’s support instructions for the adjustable design it describes say to unload the upper rack first, press both rack adjusters, and raise or lower the rack while keeping it level. That is a manufacturer example, not a universal procedure.

Use the instructions for your actual mechanism. Support the empty rack as directed and keep fingers clear of moving parts. If an adjuster is broken, jammed or unclear, stop rather than adding force.

After adjustment, confirm that both sides sit at the same intended level and are secured according to the manual. A rack that looks level from the front still needs to travel correctly on its rails.

3. Test movement and water-path clearance

  1. Slide the empty rack in and out gently.
  2. Check that it sits evenly and does not catch.
  3. Confirm any rack-mounted water connection seats as described by the manual.
  4. Check the spray arm’s movement and clearance using the manufacturer’s instructions.
  5. Load the intended item and recheck clearance before closing the door.

Do not run a cycle with an unsecured rack or a blocked spray arm. An item fitting under the rack does not establish that it can be washed properly in that position.

A worked fit check

Suppose a tall plate on the lower rack contacts the underside of the upper rack. First check that the plate is suitable for the dishwasher and positioned in the intended lower-rack area.

If the manual permits raising the upper rack, adjust it empty, then try that plate again. Now inspect the tallest item you normally put in the upper rack: the higher setting may reduce its available space.

Record rack position / lower item fit / upper item fit / spray-arm clearance / rack travel / decision. For example: “Higher position / tall plate to check / usual glass to check / arm rotation to check.” This is an illustrative checklist, not a tested result or a recommended clearance measurement.

If one item still causes trouble, wash it separately or choose another manufacturer-approved arrangement. A forced fit can turn a loading problem into damage.

4. Make the chosen position easy to maintain

Tell anyone who loads the machine which level is in use and which tall items need extra attention. Recheck the layout when changing the rack height again.

If both levels slide poorly, or a side will not secure, use the model’s troubleshooting or service guidance. This article does not cover dismantling rails or replacing adjusters.
